This is very smart and useful stuff, Joshua. Thanks for sharing this.

I used to think having a fast loading website was an expensive pipe dream. But costs have come way down in the last few years, and now it’s possible for a very reasonable amount every month. What used to cost hundreds (and still will, if you’re not careful) can be had for one quarter of that if you shop around.

Having been webmaster on a lot of sites for many years, I’ve seen the effects of good site load times and bad. I’ve even seen it on the same sites as we’ve moved them from one hosting company to another in an effort to increase speed without sacrificing support and features. In that time, I’ve literally seen sites rise (or drop) significantly in the Alexa rankings and the amount of search engine traffic simply because of speed changes. It’s that important!

Here’s a tip: if you’re using Wordpress, consider DreamPress hosting at DreamHost. I just moved a site I was paying over $100/mo. (WP VPS) for hosting at another site to DreamPress – which costs about 1/4 of this – and now my site is loading blazingly fast by comparison.

But whatever host you choose, make sure the support is good (24/7), they’re experts at your platform of choice and you’re using Cloudflare at the very least.

NOTE: DreamHost is now a Cloudflare Certified provider, which makes integration really easy and that much better.

Wow, Karl thank you for all the great tips. Definitely having a good host with great support is vital. I love my hosting company because of their great support. And you’re 100% right, loading speed is THAT important!
